Easter 2009 surf outlook
The 4 day long weekend in April always holds the promise of the fabled Easter swell, with surfer’s minds conjuring solid lines of corduroy and water still warm enough for a 3/2 steamer - even a springy. Over Easter 2009, it looks like we’ll at least be blessed with light winds and clean conditions for dawn patrollers, but we will miss lining up the “real” swell by a matter of hours. Here’s how each day is shaping up at this stage…
Friday:
Swell should pick up to an inconsistent 1′ or so on the Mid Coast, and it’ll be glassy up untill midday before a weak sea breeze kicks in. The Victor region looks like it’ll have light variable winds early Friday, tending North for the first few hours. Surf looks like it’ll be in the 1 - 2′ range at Middleton, with Waits and Parson’s in the 2 - 3′ range. Over at Yorkes west facing breaks will have small waves tomorrow, Pondie, Lizards and maybe Dust Hole.
Saturday:
There should be a Mally wave around 1′ early on the Mid, and glassy with light winds - but it’ll get caned by the outgoing tide. There should be a few bigger sets on the reefs once the tide starts back in, and light winds will keep it clean. Surf at Victor looks like it’ll be very similar to Friday’s, with glassy conditions early and 2 - 3′ surf along the south coast. Swell should kick a bit over at Yorkes, and with light winds could be fun by lunchtime.
Sunday:
The Mid Coast might ease off a bit and return to Friday like size, possibly a struggle on a shortboard for the early. Light NE winds all day look like keeping it nice and clean. Surf on the South Coast hopefully will be a bit more consistent and slightly bigger than Saturday, and once again light NE winds in the morning should mean glassy conditions. Sea breezes may add a few bumps from midday onward. Yorkes should hold similar size to Saturday, but spots like Daly’s and possibly Chi’s should start to pick up a few waves. Light winds and weak sea breezes will offer a broad window for wave hunting.
Monday:
We should see some new swell after lunch, but the morning looks like it’ll only be a slight improvement over Sunday - maybe the odd waist high wave on the Mid Coast reefs. Swell should kick to around 2′ on the (large) incoming tide after lunch, but SE - S winds may pick up during the day and take the gloss off. Down South winds may be a bit Easterly early, so depending on size Parson’s should be worth a gander. Middleton should be in the 3′ range, but possibly a bit wobbly from E - SE winds overnight. Swell should build heading toward evening. Yorkes should fare well on Monday, with a fading SSW swell and a new WSW swell meaning most spots will have a clean wave in the morning. SE - S winds may get up a bit after lunch, spoiling the South facing spots - but swell should build all day.
It doesn’t look as if Easter 2009 will deliver a mega swell, but in all probability there will be something surfable every day on the Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsula. Light winds for almost the entire weekend will mean glassy waves in the mornings, and aftrenoon sea breezes probably won’t amount to much. Monday looks like it’ll be the start of a 2 - 3 day run of good swell, but at this stage the peak of it looks like being late Tuesday / Wednesday. Don’t be surprised to check Tuesday morning’s report and find everwhere is going off its nut… just as you have to go back to work. Unless of course, you’re on school holidays - in which case you’ll be stoked.
